Snow White and Rose Red In a Vase on Monday

A bit of a mixed weekend here. A tissue got into the dark wash  sprinkling everything with white flecks but then I made soup with my own garlic, onion, courgettes and spinach. It says something that I was making soup at all in August but then Sunday was a beautiful day with the potential for getting sunburnt. It's back to the drizzle now but I have my flowers inside already.

I used to love all those old fairy tales but I suppose they are all out of favour and not at all PC. Anyway, I've borrowed the title only here and mean no political comment:

In the vase:
Dahlia - Karma Naomi
White cosmos and foliage
Atriplex
I usually like thigs which tone but I like the contrast here.

Then I had trouble finding a vase to show of these lilies. The bulbs have been neglected and not watered or fed properly but have produced anyway. Albeit on spindly stems. Not my best effort but they have been in three vases this morning so I must stop now.
Shown with:
Ammi - I found a later flowering plant, most of them have gone over.
Nicotiana - Lime green.

Last time I cut lilies I got into trouble as they dripped on the table so I have cut out the Stigma (?) which is one of the bits that drips. Perhaps I'd better not have them on the table anyway.

  1. I love the deep red dahlias we're highlighting this week and your lilies look and must smell divine. I pull the stamens off of lilies, too. They stain everything they touch!

    1. Yes, they had stained the tobacco flowers before I even had them in the vase. My sons often say 'Mum you have pollen on your nose.'

  2. Dahlia 'Karma Naomi' is gorgeous and your contrast works well; highlighting the purity of the white Cosmos and the richness of the Dahlia. Lilies are amazing aren't they? producing beautiful perfumed flowers with very little care.

    1. These lilies have had no care so yes, amazing, as they look so exotic and impress everyone.

  3. Love the restraint..given that I have now admired the large range of flowers you grow. Love Snow White and the lilies too. Great light for the photo line up.

    1. Hehe, my only restraint is the number of photos I share. I currently have several vases in the house including orange dahlias, sunflowers, asters, white dahlias, a different dark dahlia and the gorgeous 'Labyrinth' which you saw. I am so lucky!

  4. Such perfect dahlias and cosmos - do you know which variety these double cosmos are? I agree that it can be so difficult finding just the right vase for our blooms - the shape and size makes such a difference, even more so than the colour. After one of my vases was finished (can't remember which)I had little piles of different coloured pollen underneath which looked quite artistic really! Thanks for sharing today

    1. The Cosmos are T&M Allsorts mixed. They are mostly pink, some single and some double. I do have one plant of Psyche White which is quite similar. It's the only one which germinated/survived.
I love it when I am artistic by accident. The best vase would probably have been the one above with the red and white in it. I do like glass or white vases as they go with everything.
Does that mean I need more vases?

  5. Oh my, your first arrangement is captivating in it's contrasts of color and form and your lilies are beautiful and must be delightfully fragrant as well.

    1. Why, thank you. Yes a lovely fragrance. I find yellow flowers often to out scent the other colours.

  6. Both vases are absolutely lovely, Alison! Inspired by posts such as yours, I'm committed to trying Asiatic lilies again next year, either in my raised planters or large pots. Whenever I do have lilies, I also remove the stamens to avoid having the pollen dye everything it touches. I've found that sunflowers are similarly sloppy with their pollen but that pollen seems to vacuum up without leaving permanent stains as lilies do.

    1. Yes the pollen is a nuisance but I don't want to denude the flowers completely. I've put them out of the way on windowsill. I do like to have some, they are so special looking.

  7. Those dahlias are lovely! There seem to be more and more sorts of Cosmos around this year and that double white one is really pretty. I also cut the stamens of lilies off, but not because of the dripping, but because it means they don't smell quite so much. ;-) (We have sensitive noses in our house!)

    1. Ah, I like the smell and it is not overpowering but some things can be. I just had a little look at Cosmos seeds but can't make a choice so far. I have plenty of time though.

  8. Lovely, the Cosmos you get in Europe are smashing. I haven't seen any here. Dahlias and Lilies beautiful as well.Summer is winding down!
