Froth In a Vase on Monday

Just one thing in my vase this week. Ammi majus. It has just started flowering here. It's a little tricky to know when to cut as it can droop if you cut too soon. So far, so good with this lot.
I'd forgotton how much I like them. I gaze at the tiny florets, each is a perfect copy of the full head like little fireworks.

They also drop bits on the table but I forgive them. A cat has just been trying to get her head into the jug so didn't help and I may have to move it. I'd stopped putting flowers on the table when we got kittens in November, I thought maybe I could start again, but perhpas not yet.

Thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for leading the way and encouraging us to put something, anything, In a Vase on Monday

Here is a quick look at my dahlia bed.

All planted up now and it's a race to the start to see who will flower first. I think it's going to be Wine Eyed Jill. Most are no-where near but looking OK.

We just need to finish the netting which goes horizontally across all 4 beds for support. Supporting before things fall over is a new thing I'm trying!
I have all colours ranging from whites, cream, pinks, purple, red to orange and yellow. I've tried to plant in colour groups but I have't grown them all before so they may not be as expected.
Some of the ones I'm growing are Wizard of Oz, Gerrie Hoek, Jowey Winnie, Jowey Mirella, Karma Serena, Karma Lagoon, Arbatax, My Love, Nicholas, Jowey Nicky, Rip City, Cafe au Lait, Penhill Autumn Shades, Penhill Dark Monarch... There are plenty of others hopefully I'll be able to show them sometime soon.

  1. Ammi majus! Love it! I have some young plants coming along but I sowed them very late and apart from recent days, it has been pretty cold here so they have taken some time to grow! I had some in my last garden and absolutely loved it! In fact I had some in the greenhouse, along with a few of the rose geranium plants and the two together were just lovely! Your vase is a delightful reminder of how glorious that flower is! Thank you. Amanda https://therunningwave.blogspot.com/2019/07/fragrant-vases-on-monday.html

  2. So much movement and exuberance with just one type of flower - wonderful!

  3. Doesn't that look stunning in a vase?!! I find it grows uncomfortably tall and lanky - do you have any suggestions for keeping it in hand? Let me know how you get on with the netting and what size and type of mesh you use - if successful, it reduces the need for staking. Lots of lovely dahlias to come!

    1. Not really. Most of my plants are tall and lanky. Too tall. I have a few plants sown this year and kept in pots for too long. They are much smaller! The netting is green and the squares are about - 10-15cm. They must be square and the net stretched tight. I use it everywhere and it does work though it's annoying when things get tangled in it.

  4. The Ammi majus is lovely all on its own, Alison. I'm not sure the age of the cats matters with respect to vases. My 12 year old cat will go after a vase if she thinks it's getting attention that should be directed to her.

I look forward to seeing your dahlias in bloom. I tried 'Penhill Dark Monarch' last year but the tuber rotted before sprouting. Just 2 of this year's crop (small by comparison to yours!) are blooming this far, 'Enchantress' and 'Labyrinth' but I've got buds a few others.

    1. Ah ok, its the water they are after. They like any dirty old water instead of the clean water in their bowls.

  5. A fabulous white foam Alison. What a treasure trove of dahlias you have to look forward too. My first has only just opened. Sadly a number of plants at the allotment didn't make it through the winter. Oh well I've got a good excuse for some retail therapy come next spring :)

    1. It's difficult to know whether to lift them or not, with all the work that entails. Indeed retail therapy needed!
