In a New Vase on Monday

While wandering round a small town a week or so ago MrC and I found a bric-a-brac shop with boxes outside where everything was 50p.
I found this:

MrC said 'What is it? A toothbrush holder?' I see what he means but we are clearly not on the same wavelength! I think it looks more like a jelly mould.

It's not the most beautiful vase but at 50p and including the insert, it was a bargain.

I collected Sorbaria foliage, Orlaya, Osteospermum, Sweet peas, Elaeagnus 'Quicksilver' and Cerinthe.

I arranged it all with a vague notion of the shape but didn't have much time to spare. I know sweet peas look best on their own, and they'll only last a few days, but I could whip out any fading flowers and add new ones.

I've been very busy over the last few weeks. Some Flower Farm work, some not and a week in Cornwall. I entrusted the watering to a stand in and happily came back to find all was well. We have had some rain since then so that is helping my new planting.
I am now trying to harden everything off and get it planted out.
Meanwhile there is plenty flowering and lots of buds promising for the next few weeks. Having a continuous supply of flowers is one of the many challenges of flower farming. I'll try and post some pictures next week.

Finally, would you like to see a picture of our ducklings? Of course you would.

Ok two.

These hatched just over a week ago. There are 11 and they are a constant source of entertainment and time wasting. Here they are swimming in a paint roller tray which has a shallow end! Mama always keeping watch.

I look forward to seeing what everyone else has found to put In a Vase on Monday over at Rambling in the Garden where Cathy encourages us to share.

  3. Oh that is so pretty Alison! I love pastel flowers and your sweet peas look wonderful!
And the ducklings...they are soooo cute! I've always wanted to have ducks, but we have too many dogs running around. ;)

    1. Thank you. The ducks are in a run and I am keeping a very careful watch on them.

  4. Looks like there was more depth for stems to stand up in with that insert, which can sometimes be a problem. Your osteospermum are the perfect shade for the sweet peas, aren' they? Glad your waterer did a good job - not a good time of year to e away!! That is a good brood of ducks and I guess they will be better protected in your garden than in the Big Wide World

    1. Yes it does give more height in the middle. No, it was a bad time to go away, we should have gone in Feb. Anyway we got away with it! Mama and Papa are very protective but they are fenced away from predators. I still worry.

  5. I love thrift shops for great vase finds. The osteospermum's deep pink is picked up nicely by the sweet peas. Very pretty!
Your ducklings are adorable - and what a pretty and proud mama, too.

  6. Impressed as I am by both your thrift store vase and your arrangement, I'm afraid the ducklings stole the show. So cute! As to the new "vase," that insert is ideal for flower arranging. It was a great find.

    1. They certainly are. I'm sure they are twice as big as they were.

  7. What a lovely vase - an unusual bargain! And what sweet ducklings! I'd love a few of them trotting about our yard.... :)

  8. I think you have a little Victorian pressed glass vase with a frog...or it might be one of those little vases bought for a few d. delighting a humble home with a few flowers. The ducklings are delightful...

  9. What a lucky find Alison and a bargain at 50p! Your arrangement is most pretty but the ducklings are the star of the show this week. How thoughtful of you to provide a ready made paddling pool. We have a couple of ducks loitering nearby most days but no signs of any babies yet.
