In a vase on Monday

I've been brutal and dug up this inherited hydrangea. It is flowering in full Barbie pink and, in fact, there are several more who's days are numbered.
Here it is in two vases. The first:

I'm sorry if this is your favourite plant and I've offended you. It's probably still alive so if you'd like it, call round and we'll have a cup of tea and a tour of the garden and you can take it home.

This vase is destined for our office windowsill at work. I often take flowers if I have time and they do cheer up the office.

In the vase:
Barbie drink Hydrangea
Teucreum crispum
Dahlia 'Rip City'
Hordeum jubatum - foxtail barley
Ceanothus foliage
I do think they look better mixed with other things. Perhaps I add something else later.

For plenty of creative and interesting vases visit Cathy at Rambling in the Garden - In a vase on Monday.

A couple of weeks ago we had some time away in the east of the country.  I'd never been and there were several gardens I wanted to visit.
How is this for a view? The famous White Garden from the top of Sissinghurst Castle Tower.

It was pretty busy, as you'd expect, but every so often people would clear and I had a clear view for photos. It's vast and very lovely. Sadly the roses were mostly over. We've had some very hot weather so they haven't lasted long.

Still lots to see though. Definitely worth the trip across country.

  1. Haha - your hydrangea story sounds familiar to me - just the sort of thing I would do!! I shan't be popping round for yours, anyway ;) It does look fetching in the vase though and that dahlia is stunning!

    1. It does need toning down and the dahlia does that. I've planted a couple of more tasteful things.

  2. A lovely shade of pink, but I agree: It does look better with other things mixed in. ;-) Gorgeous dahlias!

  3. "Barbie pink" is the perfect description of that Hydrangea. The flowers are pretty (and very, very bright) but I can understand your decision to pull them out. Perhaps the plants will find another home. They do look better in a mix. And how wonderful to visit Sissinghurst, something I can only imagine!

  4. Hi Alison, I'm chuckling over your post. I do like hydrangeas and just wish I could get mine to flower but they obstinately refuse. They've only been in the ground two years so I might give them another year or so to get established. I should add that I'm not fond of the huge pink ones either so won't be popping over to save yours - lovely though they are. The dahlias in the second vase are stunning and do look very effective with the hydrangeas - I'm sure they will brighten up your office.

    1. Hopefully yours will settle in and flower next year. We gardeners are very patient, aren't we. I've got several things flowering which I've been waiting and waiting for.

  5. Well, at least the pink is lovely with the burgundy dahlias, but I had to laugh when you called it 'Barbie Pink!" I can see what you mean.

    1. Thanks, it does go well with the burgundy. I'm learning what a difference a colours neighbours can make.

  6. I agree about pink hydrangeas, they remind me of seaside bungalows. But having said that, I think they look wonderful in a vase, specially with the dark dahlias.
Lucky you, it's always a treat to visit Sissinghurst.
