I collected a few Hellebores and then walked around to see what I could find to go with them. The results were surprising. It's another odd ball collection of things.
I managed to make a proper little posy.
I started with some Euphorbia and Penstemon foliage and then added a couple of Periwinkle stems. Two pink Escallonia. Should they be flowering now?
Two little pink Dianthus and, most strange of all, some Virginia Stocks. I planted some of these two summers ago and they keep coming back.
It's very cheerful and lovely to have the colour.
Visit Cathy at Rambling in the Garden to find out what else people have found to put In a Vase on Monday.
Speaking of Cathy, here are two little 'Magnet' snowdrops kindly sent from Cathy to me via Noelle. These were the first ones out and very welcome. Thank you, Cathy.
Oh I am glad 'Magnet' is doing well for you - it is always a relief when my specials come through, as sadly I always lose a few each year... Your vase looks so fresh, definitely nothing like a typical January vase! I don't think I have enough hellebores to cut yet but I have some amazingly healthy penstemon foliage...just hope I get some flowers later in the year as I don't seem to have sussed out getting them to reflower
ReplyDeleteI find penstemons variable so I often take cuttings. I usually forget to label them but it's a nice surprise when they flower. I cut the foliage down in April and they usually do ok.
DeleteIt's a beautiful mix, Alison. I still find it odd that hellebores, if they bloom at all, generally don't flower here until spring when they bloom so much earlier in a colder climate like yours. As to the virginia stock, I grew some from seed last year myself and your post has me wondering if they'll make another appearance here as well.
ReplyDeleteI think the stocks started to grow after the drought which is odd but perhaps yours will seed too. Let's hope so.
DeleteHooray for hellebores! My snowdrops seem a little behind this year. They're up but not in bloom yet. Your posey is a lovely celebration of winter.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I think these Hellebores are early but I haven't checked back. It's been very mild for most of the winter, so far.
DeleteOh that's a pretty gathering Alison and what lovely markings on the hellebore. I met friends for lunch today and one of them also has pinks in flower. Are Virginian stocks scented?
ReplyDeletethat;s a really pretty posy - I love hellebores :-) I've got some ready for my Monday Vase next week. I've still got margarietes and fuchsias flowering - been v mild in Manchester.
