Sunflowers and dahlias In a Vase on Monday

Hello everyone and welcome to a wet Bank Holiday in the UK. We are hoping it might improve as the day goes on! We did go out and make the most of Saturday's sunshine. Safe to say the drought is over and the water tanks are full.

Here is a vase I made for a friend. It was to go on this hall table so I made it quite large to have impact.

There is some birch and Cotoneaster foliage, Sedum at the green stage, Vanilla Ice sunflowers and some other sunflower, Amaranthus, Nicotiana 'Lime Green' and Dahlia 'Karma Naomi'.
It's quite open and airy, the look I was going for and not symmetrical but not imbalanced I didn't think.
The critique was:

MrC- It's lopsided
Me - That's the look
MrC- But will people know it's the look or just think it's lopsided?

My friend liked it so that's what counts.

  1. Mr C's critique could well have emerged from himself's lips Alison. Your friend must have been delighted to receive such an elegant and stylish arrangement. I hope that the day perks up for you weatherwise as it proceeds. Chilly and windy here but dry ..... so far :)

    1. Thank you, she was very happy with it an no mention of lopsidedness. It is a bit drier but not very warm! Can we have summer back?

  2. Lovely fall arrangement. Sorry your holiday is wet, but I'm sure you all need the rain and treasure every drop.

    1. Thank you. We certainly don't need to worry about watering for a while which is a relief.

  3. I like your "lopsided" arrangement and think it's very pretty. Although rain arriving on a summer holiday is not optimum, it's great to hear that your drought is over.

    1. Thank you. We expect rain on holidays so it's no surprise and the garden is happy about it.

  4. The look is 'asymmetrical': terribly en vogue these days, as per haircuts, clothes etc. You've made the arrangement sing with the deep red of the Dahlia and the pale yellows of the nicotiana etc. Lovely.

    1. Thank you for those kind words. So I suppose MrC wouldn't go for me having an asymmetric hair cut then...

  5. Very pretty, Alison. I esp. love the dark dahlias, small sunflowers and trailing amaranth adding flow to the arrangement.

  6. Tee hee - I had to smile at the your conversation with Mr C!! I certainly see it as asymetrical rather than lopsided - but it is at least nice to know that he noticed and commented on the arrangement. Apart from the cotoneaster and the vase itself it could have come from my garden - but interestingly, all my amaranthus seem to have multiple tails this year, like cat o' nine tails....

    1. I probably did ask what he thought. He recently commented on a vase which has been on our coffee table for at least a week!

  8. Ha! Husbands. I never bother to ask my husband to comment on my vases as I expect I'd get something along the same lines (or worse, as my spouse is terribly color-blind). I love your arrangement and once again found myself envying the Amaranth. I visited my local garden center last week in the hope of finding one of these plants but there were none to be found. Congratulations on the rain collection, another cause of envy!

    1. Thanks. Can you grown the Amaranthus from seed next year? It's very easy but does need to be pinched out.

  10. My husband rarely comments on my vases; I'm not sure he even sees them! (along the same lines as never hearing what I say). It is a lovely vase Alison and perfect for the table you designed it for.

  11. Perhaps it's the same as not noticing if you've had your hair cut! That's why it's great to come here and meet people who appreciate flowers though I'd grow them for myself even if no-one ever saw.
