Salvage In a Vase on Monday

I'm a little later than usual posting but here is my vase.

My poor dahlias have not enjoyed the incessant rain we have had for weeks.
300mm in the last 40 days and it's rained for 29 of those 40. Not always all day every day but often. Hard to believe we had 6 weeks without any rain. What is going on?

There are a few dahlias which can be salvaged. I wouldn't normally cut these as closed as they are but I doubt they will look good when fully open. I like to the way the Penhill Dark Monarch tones with Rip City ( the dark maroon one).
There is also a little bit of  self seeded Ammi which is flowering in the dahlia patch. Always welcome. Amaranthus and Artemisia annua which smells divine. I was reliably informed that this was easy to grow. I managed to get 2 to germinate! I'm hopeful of saving seed and having better luck next year. My two plants are around 4 feet tall and covered in flowers. Has anyone had more success with Artemisia annua?

(I realise I've mentioned millimetres and feet - I went to school at a confused time!)

So this is popped on my kitchen windowsill to draw the eye away from the dismal day outside and make me happy. As Cathy rightly reminds us, we get no end of pleasure from bringing the outside in. Join in with In a Vase on Monday and find out.

  1. It's a lovely combination, Alison, and beautifully photographed against the backdrop of the rain-spattered window. I'm unfamiliar with that Artemisia but I looked it up and can see why you'd want more of it.

    1. I first heard about the Artemisia from someone who had grown a windbreak hedge of it. Not this year for me.

  3. Hope the rain balances out Alison. We're in drought here but had some Sunday for first time in weeks. Meanwhile your dahlias look great in this vase. Amaranthus adds a nice effect.

    1. I'm sure it will. We'll be begging for rain again before long and be told we had a dry winter. Hopefully you'll get some good rain.

  4. Crikey, that is wet! Our amateur weather weather suggests we have had less than half that amount in the last month. Penhill Dark Monarch looks a very pretty shade of pink, if the photo is a true represenatation. I forgotten to use my amaranthus ths season, not that it did particularly well, but it is something I will grow every year. I haven't come across the annual artemesia before, but I guess it would make a good foliage plan. Thanks for sharing, as always

    1. My records are amateur too, it's just a plastic rain gauge but it gives a rough idea. It's probably four or five times the usual. That dahlia is gorgeous and has yellow, orange and purple in it. Quite unusual.

  5. Oh the rain has been incessant in the north west Alison and we didn't get a six week dry spell at any stage. My 'Penhill Dark Monarch' was slugged to smithereens 😭 I was really looking forward to it flowering but will have to try again next year. It looks such an attractive dusky pink in your photo. I've not heard of artemesia annua so off to see what I'm missing out on.
