These gorgeous velvety Anemones are growing in my poly tunnel. The joke is that my Mum, who lives 10 miles away, has them blooming in her garden with absolutely no cosseting.
I'm very happy to see them and they have very long stems too, bonus.
Last week I mentioned scoring stems of Hellebores. I did a quick non scientific experiment and I think it did make a difference. The stems did not collapse as they often do.

I always love the jewel like colours of these, Alison but have no success growing them in the garden - I wonder why your Mum is so successful? Is it the soil conditions, do you think? You are clearly successful in your polytunnel - when do you start them off? Your vase is a bit of a trompe l'oeil as if it looks as if it has got holes in it! And I tried the slitting with a broken stem of hellebore and felt it was successful too, so that's good news for future vases!
ReplyDeleteMy mum grows everything better than me, it's very frustrating! I planted these in autumn. Pre-sprouting them, as advised, so they have started to root and are less likely to rot. Floret gives plenty of advice about growing them. The vase has little bees on it. It was a cheap charity stall find.
DeleteOh yes, anemones, they look wonderful in a vase. I always mean to grow lots so I have enough to pick and then I forget. Such a lovely vase.

DeleteThose color drenched anemones are so lush and dramatic! I decided not even to bother planting either tubers or nursery plants this year as last year's "crop" was a major disappointment due to warm temperatures and severe drought. Wouldn't you know that this year would turn out to be especially cool and wet!

DeleteOh what cheerful vibrant colours Alison. Cathy has taken the words out of my mouth with here reference to the vase :) I grow anemones in one of the raised beds at the allotment and last time I visited a couple of weeks ago there were a couple of the pink variety in flower. I think that the blue may still be going too but a combination of the weather and then a bad cold this last week have prevented me visiting. The white flowering variety only lasted one season :(
