Our weather roller coaster continues. Last week I was rummaging for summer tops but this week they are back in the wardrobe and it's cold! I had to come back in for a hat yesterday and I really don't like hats and only wear them when absolutely necessary. I looked like a Weeble, I was wearing so many layers.
On the plus side the damp weather is good for the plants I've put out. Nothing tender but lots of shrubs, herbs and perennials. It means I don't need to worry about watering them for now.
Also the garden is burgeoning. The brief spell of warm weather and all the rain has done wonders and all the trees look fantastic in their new leaves.
Again it is possible to pick a large bunch to bring in without picking every flower. I don't often pick tulips as I like them in the garden but I have quite a few this year so I could spare some Angelique. Actually, you only need a few tulips for huge impact.
I have a large Antrhiscus 'Ravenswing' growing in my poly tunnel. I should have moved it sooner but now it is very large and about to flower so I collected a few of the gorgeous dark leaves to see how they do in a vase. I think they tone down the pink a little.
I'm also trying some Symphoriocarpus foliage to see how that lasts. I have quite a lot in a hedge.
Some white honesty flowers and dark wallflowers complete the vase.
Do visit Cathy at Rambling in the garden for plenty of interesting and intriguing Vases on Monday.
The tulips are lovely. I especially admire the companions you chose for them, new plants to me. Lovely arrangement overall--perfect in the white jug.
ReplyDeleteThank you, still not loads of choice here yet but it's always fun choosing what to put in together.
DeleteThe Angelique tulips are gorgeous and go so well with the dark wallflowers.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I do like the dark ones.
DeleteBeautiful combination! I have seen so much of 'Angelique' in other garden blogs this weekend, and she is just gorgeous. Set off by your choice of foliage and Honesty. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you, she is lovely.
DeleteDefinitely cool here today Alison, but the forecast has changed and we are not due rain after all - as you, rain really helps the burgeoning even if it does hinder some tasks. The contrast of the white honesty and the vase gives a really fresh look - and teh tulips are gorgeous. aA neighbour has promised me a seedling of this anthriscus, which I am looking forward to establishing
ReplyDeleteIt turned out to be a dry but cold, sunny day and I was able to do a little gardening after work. You will like the Anthriscus. My original has disappeared after a few years so I hope I get some good seedlings. This one can't stay where it is, unfortunately.
DeleteOur weather continues to be on and off as well. What a beautiful spring confection you've put together. Plus it is always worth discovering what foliage performs well in a vase.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's as important as the flowers.
DeleteSuch a pretty arrangement! I love the way the pink and white frothiness is subdued by the dark purples.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI am clapping as I saw your photos because I planted Angelique tulips for the first time this year and after an eternal summer, the broke ground and are coming up!
ReplyDeleteOh good, I'm sure they will be gorgeous.
DeleteSo pretty, I love Angelique but I had never thought of picking it, how lovely it looks with the white honesty. I might just copy that.
ReplyDeleteI'm saving most of the honesty for seed pods but chose a little for this. Do try it.
DeleteIt's a truly beautiful arrangement, Alison. I see your well-honed skill in floristry in the mix. I've tried growing both 'Angelique' and 'Ravenswing' but of course neither like the drier, hotter climate here.
ReplyDeleteI hope your weather takes a turn for the better soon and that it sticks the next time. The weather is becoming more and more unpredictable everywhere it seems. We were told to expect summer-like heat this week but now we've been given a 40-50% chance of light rain tomorrow - and we almost never get rain as late as May!
Hehe, thanks. One thing we know in England is that the weather never 'sticks'. We are used to it but that won't stop us complaining. Several seasons in one day are never unusual. Lets hope you get some rain though.
DeleteVery pretty, and you are right - just a couple of those gorgeous tulips make enough impact. Lovely colour combinations too. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteThat is a gorgeous arrangement, I love it. Especially that deep burgundy flower. Wonderful, thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteOh that's such a pretty arrangement Alison and a timely reminder that there's an anthriscus 'Ravenswing' lurking in my coldframe. I must seek it out tomorrow so thank you. 'Angelique' is one of the first tulips I ever grew along with 'Mount Tacoma', which is peony flowered and a fabulous creamy white :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. 'Weebles' must have passed me by as I've just had to consult Professor Google. I'm sure that you didn't look like one :)
